Red Eclipse is a first-person shooter that includes several weapons (sword, pistol, submachine gun, rifle, shotgun, plasma gun, rocket launcher, grenades) and some basic modes which can be extended with one or more of several further specifications. For example "capture-the-flag" can be combined with "instagib" or "jetpack". There are 5 playable multiplayer modes and 12 "mutators", which change the gameplay in a specific way. There are also 7 mode-exclusive mutators, which can only be played in certain modes. Besides the normal FPS modes like capture-the-flag, defend-the-flag and deathmatch it also offers two more tactical modes, one of them called 'bomber ball', in which players throw a ball into the enemy team's base to score, by passing the ball around in your team or stealing it from the other team. The ball automatically explodes when you hold it too long. There also is "time trial", where you have to get through a given course as fast as you can.
